Iâve just paid for the perfect set of rings when Gavin calls. Waving goodbye to Richard, I tuck the rings into my pocket and head outside to talk to my brother.
âWhat do you have for me?â
âHeâs surfaced.â My brother sounds thrilled. âJerry. We found him downtown doing a little light shopping, probably before he goes underground to work for Petra.â
My head is on a swivel as I head to my car. âIâm downtown at the jewelry store,â I tell Gavin. âI donât see him yet.â
âSean and I are on the north end of the street. Start walking down toward us and weâll see if we can pin him in the middle somewhere. Go slow, brother, and keep your eyes open. Iâve never heard of Jerry using a gun or even owning one, but if heâs working with Petra then we donât have any reason to think that he wonât be armed. There might even be bodyguards with him, so we need to make sure that weâre keeping our eyes open.â
âYou got it.â Hanging up my phone, I slip it into my pocket by the rings then look around me before slowly starting down the sidewalk. Most of the stores arenât open yet, which means that it should be pretty easy to figure out exactly where Jerry is.
I have a pretty good feeling that heâs closer to the end of the street if heâs getting supplies to go underground. Thereâs a pharmacy there that opens early in the morning and I bet that heâs going to be there picking up whatever it is that he needs.
Picking up the pace, I reach around to my back to lightly touch my gun. Itâs still there, just like I knew it would be, but it feels good to have my fingers on it just to make sure that I have it. Iâm filled with regret that I canât be with Olivia right now, but this is what I need to take care of.
Movement ahead of me catches my eye and I step behind a column in front of the bank, my heart beating fast. So far, I havenât seen anyone out on the street, which means that chances are good that the man in front of me is Jerry.
And that means that shitâs about to go down.
This time when I reach back to touch my gun and make sure that I still have it there, I draw it, hefting it in my hand as I carefully look out from around the side of the column. The last thing that I want is to spoke Jerry and send him running. I can only imagine the absolute shit that Iâd catch from my brothers if Jerry made us and took off down the street.
So I have to go slow. I have to be careful, and I have to make sure that he never sees me coming.
When I look this time, my heart is hammering in my throat and Iâm not surprised to see that Jerry is glancing around the street as he walks out of the store.
